Color and white backgrounds showcase each object for maximum contrast. The right edge is cut out to allow readers to flip to the desired letter or number. Alphabet is striking, depicting a life-sized cat, a looming tractor, and a school of tropical fish. In Counting, "one happy baby" is depicted on the first page, "two babies getting dressed" appear on page two, and, finally, readers are introduced to "ten babies pushing toys." The last three spreads feature 15, then 20, and finally "one hundred busy babies-try to count them all!" Each page begs to be pored over and discussed. Still, I think some kind of clarification is in order before this page is overrun by either our keeper's-of-the-faith in rational/instrumental/universal economic theory, or worse, just plain (patriotic) insanity. It explores the many sounds which zills can make. We'd sit in his kitchen on winter nights, and he'd spin stories and discuss everything New Mexican, while the wood stove popped and the winds howled outside. I love the Lupi books but for me, this one didn't quite reach the level the previous stories did. It is such an essential subject for those raising livestock and can have such an impact on the heath and production of these wonderful animals that provide us with so much; milk, meat, fiber, leather and many other things.
