Elements of Computing Systems: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles by Nisan, Noam, Schocken, Shimon (2008) Paperback

There's also a sweet David Cassidy-related romance brewing (set up in part one, it comes to fruition in adult Petra's story).
Allison Pearson nails with unerring veracity all the emotions of both a 13-year-old and 30-something woman and, as a fan herself, has her Cassidy lore down cold. I think Pennefold is British, but an old ECG or NTE book will help you find the right parts. It's very detailed and has a lot of tips and tricks to working on these old machines. First, the book is written in an informal, somewhat conversational style. No matter what the problems this man and his wife had with his son, he still poured out the love and growth and understanding that seems to be lacking in most families.
I read this book and found it as exciting and meaningful in this day and age as any book I have read. Lydia embarks on a journey to recover from immediate and distant loss, and on the way gains a deeper understanding of herself and the people whose love and support she need
